Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
