Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
