Congress Passes Legislation to Release Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will require the publication of case documents associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House relented after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a case that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Passage in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.

“The American people have waited long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

The measure next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. The president stated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Although the president has for months downplayed the uproar over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he expressed his backing for the measure over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their representatives who were watching from a House gallery, cheered after the bill was approved. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he feared the measure would make public personal information of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
