Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
