Officers reported they were alerted by a individual who discovered a car in Hanau smeared with red-colored fluid

Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Police then found many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Police state early analysis suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.

A senior representative stated the incident left him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
